Anthony Daniels

Anthony Daniels (born Anthony Ward) was born on February 21, 1946 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England  he is 5'9" tall.  Even though the interest in drama came very early the acting call came relatively late to Daniels.  His parents made sure that he did not waste his time, and urged him to pursue a career in law, that in itself turned him away from his real desire to be an actor.  At the age of 24 he finally made the transition to the stage...and his growing frustration and a bequest made drama school a reality.  He trained for three years at drama college, at the end of that training an inspiring voice coach helped Daniels to win the BBC Radio Drama Award.  It gave him a six-month contract and a priceless union ticket.  From the BBC he moved to out-of-town theater.

When his contract ended he added his name to the unemployment register.  Two hours later he was called to join Britain's National Theater, the Young Vic Company.  The next eighteen months were taken up with touring Shakespeare productions in Europe and appearing at the theater's home base in London.  It was while he was playing Guildenstern in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead in London's West End  when he received a call from George Lucas...

Daniels went to meet Lucas at his office and was impressed by a conceptual painting, of C-3PO and R2-D2,  by Ralph McQuarrie hanging on the office wall.  After that meeting he was sent a script.  He met Lucas again and agreed to take the part.

Immediately he was taken to Elstree Studios and went through a rather unpleasant start, having a body cast made.  Something Daniels recalls as being, "...an extremely unlovely experience".

Daniels started to gain an active interest in special effects.  He now enjoys a secondary career in the exhibition and conference industry, where he has worked as producer/creative designer on The Westminster Experience, The Guinness Taste Sensation, Singapore's Volcanoland, Dubai's Encounter Zone, and The London Dungeon.

Daniel's writes many articles about his Star Wars experiences especially in his 'New Improved Wonder Column' in the Star Wars Insider.  He regularly contributes to Star Wars Titan magazine.  His first comic book for Dark Horse, The Protocol Offensive, is a further, darker adventure of his golden alter ego.  Recently his writing skill as well as his peculiarly detailed knowledge of the character's personality were harnessed when C-3PO was chosen to host the Monopoly Star Wars CD ROM.
