Billy Dee Williams

Special thanks to Derek Maki and CoolWatersProds.com for the photograph of Mr. Williams.

Billy Dee Williams was born April 6, 1937 in New York City, New York.  Williams' father was from Texas and his mother was West Indian.  He was raised in Harlem with his twin sister Loretta. While his parents juggled many jobs his maternal grandmother helped to bring up young William and his sister.  At 7 Williams first appeared on Broadway in the musical The Firebrand of Florence 1945.  He attended Booker T. Washington Junior High School at 108th and Columbus (Thanks to Pat, NHA.n is the first to know this info!) where he had dreams of becoming a painter, he then attended New York's High School of Music and Art and the National Academy of Fine Arts and Design.  Williams, at 19 won the prestigious Guggenheim and Hallgarten Awards.  In his pursuit of studying the arts he learned about the Stanislavsky method of natural acting through Sidney Poitier and Paul Mann at the Actors Workshop in Harlem.  Williams saw acting as a way to earn needed money for art supplies, but by the early 60's he found that all of his energy and time was devoted to acting.  His first film work was in 1959 in The Last Angry Man and in one of his first stage performances A Taste of Honey 1960 (which won the New York Drama Critic's 1961 Award for best foreign play.

He had two marriages first to Audrey Sellers and then to Marlene Clark both of which ended in divorce.  In 1964 he went into a bit of a depression but made a wonderful reappearance in the 1970 film Brian's Song playing Gale Sayers, this performance was Emmy nominated.  That success brought a seven year contract with Motown's Berry Gordy and he co-starred with Diana Ross in Lady Sings the Blues in 1972, his break-through role, and Mahogany in 1975.

The 80's brought him a whole new audience with his portrayal of Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and on TV's Dynasty.

Williams was inducted into the Black Filmmaker's Hall of Fame in 1984 and in 1985 was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Williams has always had a fascination with psychic phenomena and psychic readings.  He has even teamed up with author Rob MacGregor to write PSI/Net 1999, Just In Time 2000 and Twilight 2001.

Williams is an accomplished artist, art which he deems Impressions/Expressions and Abstract Reality.  He opened his own gallery, displaying his own paintings, serigraphs, lithos and other people's work in 'Billy Dee Williams' World Gallery' .

He was given the OK by Lucas to sell lithographs of a montage he painted of Lando Calrissian.  His works hang throughout galleries around the world.
