David Ackroyd was born on May 30, 1940 in Orange, New Jersey,
US.
He attended Bucknell University, Lewisburg PA, in 1962,
with a BA as an ROTC student. After graduating from Bucknell he did
community theatre in Arizona where he was stationed. Ackroyd also graduated from Yale Drama School with an MFA, in 1968.
Ackroyd spent three years with the Yale Repertory Theatre, six
seasons with the Williamstown Theatre Festival as well as American Repertory
Theatre which toured Taiwan and Moscow.
His experience in Moscow prompted Ackroyd in 1998 to use a
William and Eva Fox Foundation Fellowship to study cutting-edge European theatre
in Poland, Germany, France, and the Czech Republic. He found that low ticket
prices in Europe were bringing in diverse audiences who expected to be
challenged by theatre performances.
Ackroyd, and his wife Ruth Liming, are currently living
and working in Kalispell, Montana, they have been married since 1963. David is a professor of drama at
Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell and is one of the founding
members of the Alpine Theatre Project which produces plays at the Whitefish
Theatre Company, the two other founding members are Luke Walrath and Betsi
Morrison.
