David Warner

David Warner was born on July
29, 1941 near Manchester, England, UK but moved from the area when he was three
months old. The Warner family, which was not exactly a cohesive unit,
moved around quite a bit in the early years in what Warner deems a 'messy' childhood. Warner's father sent him to eight different
boarding schools while he and David's mother were taking turns caring for
him. He spent a lot of time in the cinema during these years. When
Warner entered his teens his mother moved away and he didn't see her again until
he got a call to come to her, she had suffered a stroke and was dying.
At age 18, he joined an amateur theatrical group at Leamington
Spa near Stratford-Upon-Avon, where a few years later he would star as Hamlet.
At the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, his fellow students included Tom Courtney,
John Hurt and Sarah Miles, and his diploma was presented to him by Susannah
York.
Warner found school rather
tedious, perhaps the moving around and tumultuous childhood took its toll, he wasn't athletically inclined by any stretch. His feelings on school didn't
improve much while attending the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (which his
father had suggested he attend) but he managed to persevere, but Warner seemed
to have instinctual acting ability and moved on to join the Royal Shakespeare
Company (he was only seventeen years old when accepted). At eighteen he
joined an amateur theatrical group at Leamington Spa near Stratford-upon-Avon.
In 1965 he
landed the coveted role of Hamlet at the RSC and was the youngest actor ever play the
part. He played the part with a difference, which was unpopular with
critics but very popular with younger people. His mother was buried the
day reviews came out.
At almost the same moment,
1962, Warner got his first film role. Since then Warner has taken on a
variety of roles in varying mediums, including: radio, TV, film, audio books and
plays, video games and...after a thirty year absence...returned to the theatre
where he garnered accolades for his performance in Major Barbara at the
Roundabout theatre in New York.
Warner was married to a Swedish
woman named Harriet (1969- 1972 div), then married producer Allan Carr's
assistant, Sheilah Kent (1979 - present) they have one child, Melissa (1982).
