Edward Asner

Edward Asner was born Yitzak Edward Asner was born on 15 November 1929 in Kansas City, Kansas. After his education at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas, he attended the University of Chicago, from 1947-49, where he appeared in student dramatic productions and firmly decided upon a life in the theater. After graduation and two years in the United States Army Signal Corps, 1951-53, he found work in Chicago as a member of the Playwrights' Theater Club, making his professional debut in 1953, and a member of the Compass Player (a predecessor to Second City of Chicago). He then headed for New York to try his luck on Broadway with limited success.

In 1957 he married Nancy Lou Sikes (1957- 1988 div) and had Matthew, Liza, Kathryn and Charles.  In 1961, he packed up the family and moved to Hollywood to try film and television.

In 1987 he had a son with Carol Jean Vogelman but in 1991 was engaged to Cindy Gilmore (1998 - present), a producer.

Asner says that if he hadn't have taken the path of the actor he would have been a marine diver or worked at his father's junk business, which he said, "is just as interesting as show business"
