Joseph Garber
Joe Garber (born Joseph Rene Garber) was born in Philadelphia in 1943. His childhood was filled with moves brought about because of his father's Army duties. Books and writing always kept him company through the moves. Garber started his education at the University of Virginia but dropped out to join the Army. After his service with the Army ended he returned to school, this time at East Tennessee State University where he eventually earned a degree in philosophy. He then got a job with AT&T in New York where, among other duties, wrote for their in-house magazine. From 1974 to 1984 Garber worked for Booz Allen Hamilton (technology/management consulting) but got a very bad case of the flu and after recovering decided to move to California (Woodside in the Silicon Valley). He continued his work as a management consultant but was growing tired of it and wanted to write full time. In 1989 his novel Rascal Money was published but the real success came in 1995 when his Vertical Run was published and became an international best-seller. Garber died of a heart attack on May 27, 2005 at his home in Woodside.
