Johnston
Joe Johnston was born in 1950 in Fort Worth, Texas, US.
Johnston went to Cal State Long Beach and studied to be a product designer in
the 70's.
Johnston says that he did not set out to be a director.
He got a job with Chuck Pelly Designworks (what he calls a 'plum' job).
One day when he was back at CSLB he saw a flyer put out by John Dykstra's
people. He looked at a map and noticed that the commute was less than that
of going to work at the Designworks firm, so he went for the interview and got
the job...Star Wars.
For the next nine years he worked for George Lucas...but after
those nine years he was exhausted and burnt out, he explained to Lucas that he
was going to take a year long break and Lucas replied by saying he should go to
film school (USC) and Lucas would pay half his current salary and pay for his
tuition! It was an offer that Johnston could not refuse.
