John Knoll

John Knoll was born around 1962 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Knoll is the son of former college professor Glenn Knoll.  It was Glenn who had photographic and computer interests that sparked his sons' curiosities. Knoll spent most of his childhood building models and making clay animation films in the family basement (their father's darkroom) as a hobby.

Knoll eventually pursued studies related to his hobby at USC where he graduated in 1985.  ILM was looking to hire and found Knoll at USC, they were impressed and by 1986 Knoll was working full time with ILM.

Knoll has worked on several projects outside of his work at ILM since 1986 including creating Photoshop software (with his brother Thomas), Knoll Light Factory software,  the Knoll Lens Flare and a documentary on the Apollo 11 mission with NASA.

Knoll is married, Jennifer, and has four children, Sarah, Lisa, Alexander and Jane.
