Kelly Hu

Kelly Ann Hu was born on
February 13, 1968 in Honolulu, Hawa'ii to Herbert and Juanita Hu. Her
ancestry is English, Hawa'iian and Chinese (Cantonese).
Hu has performed since she was
two years old...though it was on her aunt's porch where she was singing songs
about the daily routine and events. In school Hu started to perform in
stage productions, was enrolled in dance classes (ballet, tap) and taking
acrobatics.
Hu's parents divorced in 1974
and she and her older brother, Glenn, went to live with their grandparents in
Kahului, Hawaii. She wasted no time in getting to performing in her new
setting. In 1976 Hu moved back to Honolulu to live with her mother and
again was quick to find an outlet for her passion.
When Hu entered Kamehameha High
School she discovered the drama program and stayed for all four high school
years. By the age of sixteen she had become quite a beauty, was scouted by
a model agency (which then represented her cousin in Japan) and entered the Miss
Teen USA contest and to her and her mother's surprise she was crowned Miss Teen
USA 1985. For the following year Hu traveled as a representative of the
pageant/Miss Teen. Her travels allowed her to experience the US and have
enough money for her future move to Los Angeles.
After graduating high school Hu
pursued acting and modeling full time, with a four month run in Japan. Two
years later moving to Los Angeles, announcing her arrival in a full-page
newspaper ad then landed a role on the TV series Growing Pains (and other TV and
film roles) and took up martial arts training.
Today Hu is the busiest Asian
actress in the US. She currently lives in Brentwood, CA.
