Peterson got the role in Star Wars: A New Hope in a very logical fashion.  When he, Edlund and Alexander arrived at the location, which was covered by jungle growth that had to be cleared, they discussed who would be the guard in the "bird's nest" perch high above everything else.  It was decided that because he had no children Peterson was the most likely candidate for the position.
